Engine and Performance

The RS3’s odd five-cylinder engine is among its most distinguishing features. Its unusual number of cylinders gives it a distinctive thumping sound that was especially appealing on the previous generation. The most recent model is once again a turbocharged 2.5-liter, but it now produces 401 horsepower. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that downshifts intentionally in response to minor throttle inputs, but is less forceful under heavy braking.
