Powertrain Components and Overall Performance

The base engine in the Blazer is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 228 horsepower. In comparison, a 3.6-liter V-6 with 308 horsepower is available as an option. Front-wheel drive is standard on both, as is an automatic gearbox with nine gears. The turbo-four in the front-wheel-drive model is powerful enough for city driving and interstate cruising. However, the V-6’s terrific acceleration and increased confidence while overtaking the highway make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a little more oomph. Slow to shift gears when we needed a burst of acceleration was a problem with the automatic gearbox we tested in the previous Blazer RS.

The four-cylinder can pull 1500 pounds, whereas the V-6 version can haul 4500 pounds. Blazer’s steady poise and precise steering make it Chevrolet’s best-driving crossover. The RS variant, with its precise steering and suspension settings, proved notably confident & responsive on curvy portions of the road. Although the RS version of the Blazer has a sportier suspension, the base model is still more enjoyable than many of its rivals. Compared to the RS variant, the regular 18-inch wheel-and-tire combination gave a smoother and quieter ride.

For the most part, on flat ground and at highway speeds, both cars sounded quiet. While the steering provided a pleasant sensation while driving aggressively, it also felt smooth when moving slowly. Our Blazer RS test car came to a halt from 70 mph at an outstanding 165 feet, thanks to a firm brake pedal that promptly reacted to our inputs.

Real-World MPGs & Fuel Efficient

The base turbo four-cylinder engine in the Blazer achieves up to 22 city mpg and 29 highway mpg. The V-6 model gets up to 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the interstate. All-wheel-drive, V-6 Blazer got a real-world 24 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route; the four-cylinder version hasn’t been tested on this section of our lengthy testing routine. In the same test, the Honda Passport and the Hyundai Santa Fe returned 27 miles per gallon (mpg).

Build quality is consistent across all trim levels, despite the more conservative styling in lower-tier models. Most high-traffic areas are covered in soft-touch materials, so there are few harsh plastics on exhibit. The Chevrolet Blazer falls short of some of its competitors in terms of internal passenger and storage room. But there is, of course, a price to pay: a more aggressive look.
