Mechanics, Engine, and Transmission of 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Vs. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Compare Engine

The RAV4 Hybrid has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s helped by two electric motors to make 219 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, and so is a continuously variable automatic transmission. One of the electric motors drives the rear wheels, and the other motor and the gasoline engine drive the fronts, so they all work together to get the car going (CVT). So not only is the RAV4 Hybrid more efficient, but it’s also faster. In our tests, the RAV4 prime sped up to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, which is very quick. 7.4 seconds for 60 mph in our hands, while the gas-only model took 8.2 seconds to do the same thing in our hands. Especially in the city, where the electric motor gives the car a little extra push when it has to start moving again from a standstill. The Prime model is more than happy to help you if you want even more power. Even though these Hybrid and Prime models have good steering and a comfortable ride, don’t expect any cornering stunts.

If you buy the base model of Tucson Hybrid, you’ll get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 187 horsepower. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front or all-wheel drive, and you can choose. Hyundai says that you’ll get 227 hp and 261 hp from turbocharged 1.6 liter in Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. All-wheel drive is standard on the Hybrids, and both have a six-speed automatic transmission. The non-Hybrid Tucson has enough power for city driving and highway passing maneuvers, but if you’re quick on your feet, you’ll want more. When we took our all-wheel-drive Limited test car to the test track, it went from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.8 seconds. It is how fast our Limited Hybrid test car went from zero to 60 mph on our test track. Don’t expect the Toyota RAV4 Prime’s speed from either of the more powerful Hybrid or plug-in Hybrid models. They both feel faster. Indeed, the Tucson isn’t a sports car, but it handles well, the steering isn’t bad, and the ride isn’t bad. How quiet and refined the Tucson feels when you’re driving makes the SUV feel like a real luxury car.

Aspects of Battery Life, Charging, and Range of 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

The RAV4 prime can go 42 miles if you only drive on electricity. It stores its electrons in an 18.1-kWh battery pack, and it can go that far on electricity alone. In our tests, we could drive 32 miles on electricity alone, but that was on the highway. We would expect to move a lot farther in the city. Standard on the Prime XSE is an onboard charger with 3.3 kWh of power, but you can get a 6.6 kWh charger for an extra fee. This charger reduces the time to charge to 2.5 hours on a 240-volt outlet to just 1.5 hours. Expect it to take about 12 hours to charge if only a 120-volt outlet near you.

The Tucson plug-in Hybrid has a 13.8-kWh battery pack that the EPA says can go 33 miles on electric power alone. The vehicle has a 7.2-kW onboard charger. If you connect your car to a level 2 charging station, the battery can be fully charged in about two hours.

Real-World MPG of 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

It is much more efficient when comparing the Hybrid RAV4 to a gas-powered all-wheel-drive RAV4. The EPA says it will get 41 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 40 mpg combined, which is 14 mpg better than the regular RAV4. It got 37 mpg on our 200-mile route fuel-economy test, which is one mpg less than the EPA says it should get. Our highway fuel-economy test got us 73 MPGe. The prime gets 94 MPGe overall, and it did even better than that.

The EPA says that non-Hybrid versions of the 2022 Tucson should get up to 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway if they have front-wheel drive. The Hybrid model can get 38 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the road. In the EPA’s test, the plug-in Hybrid model got 80 MPGe combined and 33 miles of electric-only driving combined. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, the Hybrid model didn’t meet its EPA estimate of 38 mpg, getting just 28 mpg. We haven’t tried the plug-in Hybrid or the non-Hybrid Tucson yet.

Cargo and Comfort of 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

The RAV4 Hybrid’s cabin is well made and well-equipped, but it’s more about practicality than style. With many cubbies and bins to choose from, you’ll have a lot of room to store small things, and all of the buttons and controls are easy to find and use. In addition to dual-zone automatic climate control, a telescoping steering wheel, and a height-adjustable false floor in the back of the car, Toyota throws in a lot of extras at the base level. You get more luxury features when you go up the trim level ladder, like heated front and rear seats and ambient interior lighting. Toyota calls this new faux-leather upholstery “SofTex.” The RAV4 Hybrid has the same space for cargo and passengers as the regular RAV4. Our tests fit ten carry-on suitcases behind the second row and 22 with the rear seat folded.

Hyundai’s flagship Palisade SUV and the brand’s recently redesigned Sonata and Elantra sedans have been a kind of watershed moment for the company’s interior designs. The new Tucson looks to keep that trend going with a well-thought-out interior filled with high-quality materials and luxury features. With an electronic gauge display, a push-button gear shifter, and touch controls for the climate control and entertainment systems on the dashboard of the new Tucson, it has a simple but modern look. There is more room for passengers and cargo in the 2022 Tucson than its predecessor.
