2022 Volkswagen Passat Specs, Price, MPG & Features
The 2022 Volkswagen Passat isn’t as exciting as some of its competitors, which are flashier and faster family sedans. When the VW is parked next to a low, wide Hyundai Sonata or a sleek Kia K5, it looks boring. Even though the inside is also unremarkable, it is well put together and made of nice materials. The inside of the Passat is also roomy, especially in the back seat. This, plus the fact that it comes with a lot of standard driver aids like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, makes it a good choice for families. Its four-cylinder engine works smoothly, but it’s much slower than competitors like the Honda Accord, and VW doesn’t offer all-wheel drive or a hybrid version like many of its competitors do. Still, the 2022 Passat has a comfortable ride and a price that makes it a good choice. Some customers might like these qualities and its refined German style more than more popular mid-size cars.

Engine and Performance
The Passat only has one choice of engine: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 174 hp and a six-speed automatic transmission. During testing, the engine was smooth and quiet all the way through its rev range, and it made it easy to move the sedan. The automatic works well most of the time, but when we tested it, it sometimes jerked when going slowly in heavy traffic. The Passat can handle long trips on the highway or short trips on country roads. It has a smooth, almost luxurious ride and predictable handling, making it a comfortable vehicle that can do a lot.
Interior & Comfort
Volkswagen’s simple design language is shown inside the Passat by straight, clean lines. The interior of the Passat is nice in a German, utilitarian way, but it doesn’t have enough originality to get our full praise. The Volkswagen’s cabin isn’t all bad, though. It’s one of the roomiest and most comfortable in its class. With its open cabin and thin door pillars, the Passat has a great view of the outside world. Most family sedans can carry about the same amount of stuff. It was able to fit 16 carry-on-sized boxes behind the front seats when the seats were folded almost all the way down. Real-world carrying capacity put the Passat at the bottom of the family sedan pack. This may be because Volkswagen gave up some trunk space to give the Passat a big back seat.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The standard infotainment system has a 6.3-inch touchscreen, a three-month subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and several USB ports. The top model comes with navigation, a bigger 8.0-inch display, a premium sound system, and a six-month subscription to VW’s Car-Net services. This lets the user find the car, call for help on the road, and even lock and unlock the doors from their smartphone.

Fuel Economy
The EPA fuel economy rating for the Passat’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine is average for family sedans, and many of its competitors offer more fuel-efficient models and hybrid options. The VW gets less gas mileage in the city (24 mpg) and on the highway (36 mpg) than the four-cylinder Toyota Camry.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Even the base model comes with some driver-assistance technologies, but the most advanced ones are only in the top trim. Key features include:
- Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
- Available adaptive cruise control
