Engine and Performance

A continuously variable automatic gearbox connects the Accent’s 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 120 horsepower and powers the front wheels, to the drivetrain (CVT). It should come as no surprise that ride comfort is prioritised above dexterous handling. Despite this, the Accent has a dynamic feel to it, its compact body can be quickly thrown into corners, and it even feels gratifying when driven hard. Although the suspension does a sufficient job of smoothing out uneven surfaces, the driver and passengers will still feel vibrations from very strong hits.

Interior & Comfort

The grown-up interior of the Accent seems to be well made, but it doesn’t have the fun style of the Kia Rio or the roomy back seats of the Honda Fit, which are nearly six inches longer. The interior of the Accent is simple and straightforward, with no frills. Both of the test cars had black interiors, which were well made but gave them a serious, businesslike look. With two-tone tan and black seats and the same look on the dashboard and door panels, the optional beige interior gives the car a more luxurious feel. Even though the Accent was a sedan and had less cargo space with the back seats up, it could fit more carry-on luggage than the Rio, which was more of a hatchback. In fact, when the back seats were folded down, the Accent could hold just two less cases than the very roomy Fit.

Fuel Economy

People expect small cars to get good gas mileage, and the Accent does just that. With the new four-cylinder engine, the combined fuel economy has gone up to 36 mpg.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Standard is a 5.0-inch touchscreen radio with USB and auxiliary ports for connecting other devices. The 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with the SEL and Limited trims is more advanced. The bigger screen is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and there’s a second USB port on the back of the centre console. Both systems let you connect your phone via Bluetooth, but the 7.0-inch touchscreen also has SiriusXM satellite radio.
