The New Toyota Crown 2023 Wants to Reinvent Sedans

Toyota created a different kind of car for them, because of Gen X doesn’t like conventional sedans. Now fans of Toyota will be celebrating in 2023. Along with the all-new GR Corolla, the 2023 bz4X, the entirely rebuilt Toyota Sequoia, and other vehicles, a new manual transmission GR Supra is on the way. However, there is still one more new model in the inventory, and Toyota of N Charlotte is prepared to greet the Toyota Crown when it arrives in the country.

The longest-running nameplate of the carmaker makes its official return to the United States for the first time since 1972 with the introduction of the 2023 Toyota Crown. Although an executive sedan has historically carried the Crown moniker, it has also been applied to coupe, waggon, and even pickup trucks over the years. However, Toyota has now resurrected the Crown to the American market with a sedan that borrows features from SUVs like the Subaru Legacy SUS/Outback or Honda Cross tour. R&T went down with several Toyota North America execs to find out more about the motivations behind this odd aesthetic choice.

There is no denying that the sedan is a rare breed in the American auto industry. SUVs’ higher profit margins and rising customer interest have prompted automakers like Ford and Chevrolet to begin completely discontinuing their sedan lineups. Toyota has a huge collection of crossovers on offer and SUVs, but the company has made no secret of its desire to see sedans survive. However, the automaker was aware that a refreshed Crown sedan would need to stand out from the competition in order to draw buyers away from the expanding crossover industry.

Lisa Materazzo, vice president of marketing for Toyota North America told R&T, “Globally, there was a desire to reinvent the Crown, and to reinvent our entry in the sedan segment specific to the United States.”

The 2023 Toyota Crown is built on the TNGA-K platform, which is also the foundation for a number of other Toyota models, including as the Camry, Venza, Avalon, RAV4, Sienna, and Highlander. Materazzo notes that the combination of sedan and SUV platform-mates is telling and that the Crown engineers were able to draw lessons from those various markets to help improve the performance of this product. It could also explain why the Crown occupies a dimensional space in between all of these vehicles. The sedan is four inches taller than a Camry at 60.6 inches, although it is exactly the same width at 72.4 inches. However, the Crown’s overall length of 194 inches is almost exact for a Highlander. The Crown does often resemble a sedan that has been raised in order to avoid becoming offensive in its implementation of the proportions.

Even if the 2023 Toyota Crown isn’t precisely a performance vehicle, it’s encouraging to learn that Toyota is actively considering driving dynamics. The Camry and Corolla deserve all the acclaim in the world, but Toyota hasn’t always been known for its exciting sedan models. Even while it is, in actuality, a brief crossover, hopefully The Crown can begin to change that.

Why haven’t we seen it in the US and what is the Toyota Crown 2023?

• The Toyota Crown has not before been sold in the United States. However, it is a well-liked luxury sedan for drivers in Japan, and executives have relied on it for decades (literally, since 1955), providing them with a choice of a roomy and opulent car. But it wasn’t accessible in the U.S. after 1958, and up to until 2022 (the Toyota Avalon’s final year on the market), we had the Toyota Avalon in its place.

• We do know that when the Toyota Crown arrives to Toyota of N Charlotte, it will have undergone a thorough redesign. Despite the lack of concrete information, rumours suggest that it will be even sportier than its sedan forerunner, with a coupe or possibly crossover shape. It will likely be slightly larger than a sedan but smaller than an SUV, in our opinion.

• It will probably be constructed on the TNGA-K platform, have an all-wheel drive option, and a hybrid drivetrain of some kind. However, we’re not quite certain if it will be a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or even an electric car, but we do know that it will provide major fuel efficiency and the green performance.

• The next Toyota Crown is said to sport a 2.4L 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain with 200-210 horsepower. Others continue to believe that this new Toyota will instead come equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged inline-four and a six-speed automated transmission. Whichever alternative produces 350+ horsepower is what we’d choose.

• The 2019 Toyota Crown is said to have a roomier interior than the model’s previous sedan incarnation. We have a tendency to believe that this is the case; similarly to how the Toyota Avalon was, we anticipate that this new N Charlotte Toyota will be more luxurious and comfortable, more akin to a Lexus.

• The technology is said to be out-of-this-world and is probably very comparable to that of the top-of-the-line bz4X and when it comes to technological features it is extremely cutting edge.
